Diabetes Specialist Psychologist
This clinic is run to help people with diabetes get ready for lap-banding surgery:
- As a treatment option for obesity and diabetes
- To assist you to gain access to the procedure and make it more successful
- To provide you with the necessary knowledge and skills to support positive health outcomes
This clinic is run for people with type 2 diabets to assess how well they will cope with the surgery as a treatment option for obesity. A dietitian is also involved to help with the assessment and to provide you with education on what to expect. A report is sent to the lap-banding surgeon who has the final say in the suitability of the procedure for patients.
Lap-banding patients are also seen six weeks post-surgery to assist with the transition to living with a lap-band.
Inclusion criteria:
- The person is diagnosed with diabetes, or
- The person is diagnosed with pre-diabetes, and
- Lap-banding surgery has been advised

Clinic location
Clinics are run at the Devonport Comunity Health Services Centre, Devonport, and the North West Regional Hospital, Burnie.
